GÆDLIN

n. variant of old English ‘gædeling’ (ˈɡæ.de.linɡ), meaning companion, kinsman, or comrade.

Later applied as a slur to mean, ‘one of low birth; rascal, rogue, vagabond, or one who travels widely,’ (i.e. to ‘gad about’). From Proto Germanic gāda, meaning companion.

In the liminal space that lies between countries, eras, and genres stand Gædlin, a Helsinki-based, ever-evolving Global Folk ensemble. With core members hailing from the USA, Finland, and the Netherlands—featuring an array of talented guest artists & a creative assortment of instruments—this unlikely band of companions weave a mercurial combination of original folk songs, swinging dance tunes, darkly storied ballads, and traditional pieces from around the world.
